Yes, parts of this trip require you to float through an underground river. There is also a short swim section in deeper water. You must be comfortable in water. You will be provided a warm, caving specific wetsuit and gumboots to keep you warm during your adventure.
No, caving experience is not required for this trip. However you do need a moderate level of fitness to be able to navigate through the cave system.
Your swimsuit, a towel and some socks to wear in your gumboots. These will get wet so it's best to bring and old pair or some you won't mind getting wet.
Unfortunately for health and safety reasons for you and your equipment, we cannot take camera gear for our guests into the cave. Our guides do have a camera and will endeavor to take some great snaps of you underground, which we will send to you at the end of the trip, free of charge. However please be aware our main priority is getting people through the cave safely and everyone having a great time, meaning our stops for photos are kept minimal. If you are a photographer or would like to take underground photos, take a look at our private tours which does allow gear and photos to be taken in the cave.
You'll need a moderate level of fitness for the adventure! The tour involves walking, climbing, swimming, and navigating uneven terrain.
There are some tight squeezes/spaces in the cave but they are completely OPTIONAL and are only there if you want the challenge. If you dont want to do them you just stick to the main passagways where it is nice and open.

Kaitiakitanga (the Māori concept of guardianship and protection of the land and natural resources) is something we take seriously at The Waitomo Experience.
The Okohua cave lies on a fourth generation family farm that has planted thousands of native trees. For every booking that comes through for the Okohua Cave, we plant a native tree. We developed this initiative to always give back to Papatūānuku (mother earth) and protect our natural asset for generations to come.
